When we start to talk about the exclusivity of the Gospel, it is not about closing the door for anyone, but about recognizing that God has flung the door wide open through one specific way. Jesus did not come to just offer another path or extra options.

The World Is Broken

Whether you believe that God created the world during the seven days of creation or that the universe came into existence through a big bang, you are probably aware of the fact that we live in a society that has long been broken. It is the sum of many things that brings forth the brokenness we see today.

Ranging from sickness, greed, and injustice to wars, natural disasters and economic uncertainties, these issues seem to come from nowhere but the world and humanity’s selfishness. For centuries, people have had to face the realities of the world, and while the specifics may change, the essential issues remain the same. Our society has to grapple with a world that is, in so many ways, fractured.

On August 6, 1945 the United States of America dropped the first atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima causing the deaths of over 100,000 people. Barely three days later they dropped the second atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki. Most of the people killed were civilians. The U.S justified their actions with claims of trying to end World War 2. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina blew into the Gulf of Mexico almost completely filling it. It is among the most powerful hurricanes on record with winds that were above 150 mph. There were over 1,300 casualties and thousands of homes were completely wrecked.

In 1861 the U.S. began the Civil war, dividing themselves into the North and the South. They fought over many things including the right to own slaves. It went down in history as the war with the most American deaths, with over 600,000 casualties. These numbers are only a representation of the brokenness in America, and do not begin to account for the vast amount of brokenness around the globe.

The world is knee-deep in death caused by other humans, and full of people suffering from others past decisions. When one person is grieving, another may be suffering through illness; where one country finds peace, another might be in the midst of war. There are many kinds of suffering in the world that everyone has to deal with, but the difference is how people handle the brokenness in their lives.

Using Brokenness to Point to God

The brokenness in the world is one of the biggest examples to point towards the existence of God. It is hard to see the evil in the world around us and not wonder where it came from. We see all kinds of evil, as portrayed in the opening of this essay. Some might ask what type of cruel creator would make a world with so much evil in it? The answer to that question is God, yet he is so far from being cruel. God made all things in the world, and said that “[they] were good” (Gen. 1.12).

Not only did he create the universe, but he spoke it into existence. “God said, ‘let there be light’ and there was light” (Gen. 1.3). The power it would take to speak something into existence is incomprehensible for someone as limited in power as a human. Evil entered the perfect world only after Adam and Eve chose to commit the very first sins. James Anderson says, “The existence and attributes of God are evident from the creation itself, even though sinful human beings suppress and distort their natural knowledge of God,” (James Anderson, TGC). Sin in the world is being used to “suppress” people’s relationships with God.

Let us say someone does not believe in the Bible. How then are you supposed to show them that God exists? We can do so through the topic of Moral Law. When thinking about the sin/evil in the world, people often wonder, “why is this happening?” or “well that is not fair to those people.” Ultimately these questions come from a place of searching for some moral code to abide by.

If there is no God then there is no Creator, and if there’s no Creator then there was never a moral law. If this were true then why is it that we humans think it is wrong to steal or kill? With no creator there would be no one to create these Moral Laws. Without the moral laws you could not break the moral law. “If no broken laws, then no problem of evil. . . If there is no God, there can be no evil” (Greg Koukl, STR).

If there is no God then there is no Creator, and if there's no Creator then there was never a moral law.

Seeing as we already know that there is evil in the world, we are able to deduce that there is also a God. 1 John says that “we know that we are of God, and the whole world is under the sway of the evil one” (1 John 5.19). Through these worldly evils, we can see a clear hand pointing towards God.

Why Logic Demands God

So, at this point we have now established that the world is broken and that it points towards the existence of God. From there it is important to recognize why the Christian understanding of the Gospel is necessary for dealing with the broken world we live in. It is important to know that the Gospel is not exclusive in the sense that it is only for certain people, but that it is exclusive in the sense that there is only one true way to heaven.

The gospel message is for each and every one of God’s human creations, but everyone has to come the same way. The good news of the Gospel is that it is there for all, but not everyone receives it. It is received through heart transformation by grace through faith.

As Peter says when questioned by the Jewish leaders, “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved” (Acts 4.12). When taken into deep consideration, why would Jesus die on the cross after living a perfect life if there were other ways to heaven? Even Jesus prayed that, “if it be possible, let this cup pass from me,” not for his own will but for the will of God (Matt. 26.39). Even though it was not Jesus’ desire to die, he still laid his life down on the cross for God’s will.

Our culture likes to teach, “live your life the way you want to,” or that “your truth is your truth.” The world tries to tell people that you can make your own God and live your own lives. This is so far from the truth. There is one true God who is all powerful. It is His will that must be done. He is the one who created a path for us into His kingdom after the initial sins.

Finally it is important to understand why the exclusivity of the Gospel is such an urgent message. If Jesus is the only way to God then it is essential for people to hear about him. Jesus’ last message to the disciples was to “go therefore, and make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28.19).

Through the broken world that we live in we are able to see how it points to the existence of God. The Gospel is essential to the world seeing as it is the message from God for our broken universe. It is meant to be shared so that all may come to know Him, God, the almighty Father. We are all creations of God, but only those of us who have accepted God as our holy Father are considered his children. The necessity for the message of God can only be weighted in the eternal lives of those around us. It is God’s want and desire for us to make our way through the narrow gate so we may live our eternity with him.

(Matt. 7.13-14)

“Enter through the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who go through it. How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it.”
